Getting to know Marshon Brooks

Marshon Brooks
Today I’m going to be taking a look at Marshon Brooks
Here is what I’ve found (most info from draftexpress.com, nbadraft.net, youtube.)
Physicals
Height: 6’5” (7’ 1” wingspan)
Weight: 195 lbs
Birthday: 1-26-89 (22year old; Senior at Providence)
*Shooting Guard
*Top 10 shooting guard in draft,
I wasn’t going to originally going to do Marshon Brooks, but his named popped up after the first day of the NBA Draft Combine so I decided to do a small breakdown of him.
Brooks finished the year averaging an impressive 24 points a game for Providence. This was on 48% shooting from the field (35% from 3). This is Brook’s biggest strength, he can really score. He has a great ability to create his own shot, and can be a lights out shooter. The knock on his offense is that he will take bad shots, like pull up threes early in the shot-clock and stuff like that. He is more average when it comes to finishing around the rim. This is probably because Brooks has just normal athleticism and explosiveness.
Brooks is nothing special on the defensive end, however he has everything that it takes to be a good perimeter defender. His height (6’ 5”) and wingspan (7’ 1”) are great physical attributes to have if you want to be a good defender. If Brooks is coached right, and tries hard on the defensive end, he will be a good if not better than average than defender. He actually averaged 1.5 steals and 1.2 blocks on the year. Also note that he averages 7 rebounds a game. 7 boards and 1 swat a game is not something you typically expect out of your shooting guard.
After watching a few different videos on this kid, he makes me think of a player that is a mixed version of The Jimmer and CJ Miles. No he is not The Jimmer, no he is not CJ Miles, but I see a lot of similar things in him from both of them. Brooks can flat out score like The Jimmer, he put up a Big East record 52 points this year (had another game of 43). His shot selection seems similar to The Jimmer as well, he doesn’t have quite the range, but he does get most of he his points off threes and jumpers. He also can finish around the rim like The Jimmer. The CJ I see in him is that he has a knack for taking bad shots (The Jimmer also has this problem, but not as bad) like those early in the shot-clock jumpers I mentioned. His body style is obviously more similar to CJ than The Jimmer.
Anyways, Brooks is a very good player. Although he did impress at the draft combine, I still think he is a stretch at #12 right now (probably better around #20), but I would not be surprised at all if he ended up being a top 10 talent out of this draft. He has what it takes to be a legit starting two guard in the NBA, something the Jazz need.
